A Guide to the Non-Resident Nepali Card (NRN)

APPLICATION OF NRN ID CARD

As per the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Nepal, the Embassy has started to issue digital NRN ID card instead of the handwritten/computer typed card. All the applicants are requested to mandatorily fill the application form for the digital NRN ID from the link given below:

  1. NRN Card Benefits
    • Visa-free entry into Nepal for non-citizens of SAARC member states.
    • Ability to open bank accounts in foreign currencies and convert them to Nepalese rupees.
    • Investment opportunities in Nepal’s industries using convertible foreign currencies.
    • Repatriation of investment proceeds in foreign currency.
    • Property transactions, subject to limitations, for inheritance and ownership.
    • Tax exemptions on initial capital investments.
    • Tax exemption certificate for up to NPR 15 Lakhs for personal expenses for close relatives.
    • Tax exemption for funds remitted via formal banking channels for social, cultural, religious, charity, sports, and disaster relief projects.
    • Establishment of businesses and access to investment benefits for foreigners.
  2. Economic Engagement and Empowerment
    • Active participation in Nepal’s economic landscape.

  3. Process of Obtaining NRN Card
    • Secure NRN application form from Nepali embassies, diplomatic missions, or Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
  4. Submit Required Documents
    • Proof of Nepalese Citizenship renouncement, if applicable.
    • Naturalization certificate of a foreign country, if applicable.
    • Passport of a foreign country, if applicable.
    • Nepalese Citizenship Certificate.
    • Parent’s Citizenship Certificate.
    • Documentary proof of business, occupation, or employment in the country of residence.
  5. Attention to NRN Card Photo Specification
    • The image must be in color.
    • The size must be 35 mm in width and 45 mm in height for a passport-formatted photo or 25 mm in width and 30 mm in height for an auto-size image.
    • The head should be centered and occupy 70-80% of the photo.
    • The picture must be recent.
    • The background must be plain white.
    • Glasses are allowed, but the frame must not cover any part of your eyes. Dark glasses are not permitted.
    • Head covering is allowed for religious or medical reasons, but full facial features must be visible. Head accessories for any other reason are not allowed.
    • The photo must be in focus, with balanced lighting and color.
    • There must not be any shadows on your face or behind your head.
    • ‘Red eye’ in photographs is not acceptable.
    • Keep your facial expression neutral and look straight into the camera.
  6. Processing Time and Investment
    • Processing time averages 2 to 5 working days.
    • Application fee: USD 20 outside Nepal or Rs. 1500 in Nepal.
    • Card fee varies based on geographical regions:
      • Citizens from European countries, North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea: USD 500.
      • Citizens from other countries: USD 250.
      • Nepali citizens residing abroad: USD 50.
